Show Notes
A weekly live show covering all things Freedom Tech with Max, Q and Seth.
This week we're joined by SF, aka Pleb Royale, a designer and Noderunner from the Netherlands behind a pile of free Bitcoin art and Noderunners Radio, a listener-funded internet radio station where song requests are paid for in sats. SF talks us through his design background (BTCPay Server skins, the Bitcoin Focus magazine, logo work for Alex Gladstein and Andreas Antonopoulos, and the Noderunners logo that's spread right across the community) and how a group of friends running nodes in the Netherlands turned into one of Bitcoin's most dedicated grassroots scenes, including this year's Noderunners Conference held in Arnhem's old prison.
We get into how the station's jukebox evolved: built first by HeroVK as a Telegram bot controlling SF's Spotify, then rebuilt from the ground up with AI once he picked up a Claude subscription, and now running on self-hosted LNbits with its own seven-and-a-half-terabyte music library. Library tracks cost 21 sats as an anti-spam measure, Wavlake tracks run through a value-for-value lane where most of the 210 sats goes straight to the artist, and live DJ and band sets (streamed over RTMP) pool donations that only get split out once the set ends. Everything moved to self-custodial wallets to stay clear of EU rules around holding value, which is also why the old bot's leftover user balances are only now being unwound for withdrawal.
SF also sets out the station's manifesto, a push toward a real FM/AM broadcast that could carry the state of the Bitcoin network over the airwaves if the internet ever goes down, and the idea of musicians timestamping their work to the chain as proof of creation. He clears up a tweet aimed at Breez after Misty Breez broke in September (his post, Roy's reply): it wasn't the radio's backend failing, just bad timing trying out Liquid swaps right as the hack hit. Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Freedom Tech Friday, a live and interactive show taking place every Friday at 9AM eastern at 2PM UK time across the ungovernable network. Each week, we dig into the latest in Freedom Tech, including Bitcoin, Monero, encrypted messengers, privacy tools, and everything in between.
Essentially, if there is a news item, tool, or topic that can help you take back some control in today's digital Panopticon,
then we wanna talk about it. This show and the topics we cover are powered by Freedom dot Tech, a daily news desk that uses AI to monitor hundreds of sources so we can continue to bring you the signal each and every week.
My name is Q and A and I'm head of customer experience at Foundation. And as always, I'm joined by Max, the head honcho of the ungovernable network. Seth, who is COO at K Wallet. And we also have dad, John, sat in his truck joining us for this one as well as our esteemed guest.
Top show for last week's last week's Fintech Friday with Nathan Day comes from late stage Huddl who sent in 6,006 sats and said, keep up the good work gents with a saluting emoji. But we also do have an honorable mention for an on chain booster, Gabriel Brown, who didn't tag a show but he he zapped us 83,448
sats with no comment. So I thought given the volume... All a all a boost. We should say thank you. Yeah. Thank you both for your support. Without further ado, John, I know you can't speak right now and you're coming in five minutes. So Max, Seth, how are you doing, mate?
I'm doing well. Hopefully, my audio quality, mate. My cousin set up this morning isn't too terrible. You know, it's a it's a it's a hard downgrade on the on the road from the the full podcast with Greg. So I'm just gonna... I'm normal speed this morning, but Doing well. Doing well. Yeah. Sounds like good... Yeah.
Never go full peasant. He's... Yeah. I I have... I mean, I I have... And y'all have seen it. I've sent you a picture. I have taken the full podcast and set up on trips before. Yeah. A little overkill, but I've done done it.
All good. Yeah. Good here, mate. Good here. Very excited for our guest today. It's been... I looked last time we spoke on a pod was 2021, January 2021. So Oh, shit. Yeah. What's that like? That's like that's like eighteen Bitcoin years, is it, or something? At least thirty, I would say.
But, yeah, excited excited to have them on, yeah, and get into this and Well, to have joining us as well. Absolutely. Yeah. I'm excited for for John to join in later on as well. So, yeah, let's let's welcome our guests. We have SF, aka Pleb Royale, who is a designer, node runner from The Netherlands who builds the fun side of Bitcoin.
They got a radio station where listeners can pick the songs and pay with sats, a Bitcoin tarot machine, lightning fortune cookies, and a lot of free art. SF, welcome to the show, sir. How the devil are you?
A very good morning to you. Thanks for having me. I'm doing quite alright, actually. It's been a roller coaster as per usual in the Bitcoin space, but I'm I'm having fun where I can get it. So, yeah, thanks thanks for letting me join the chat. I appreciate it. Absolute pleasure.
There there undoubtedly will... Let me start that again and take a sip of coffee. There will undoubtedly
be a number of people listening to this. You may not have come across your your Twitter account or your Nostra account before. So let's start at ground zero and, you know, who is SF, and what do you do? What do you... What you're about? Give us your your background.
Well, I guess you could say I have proclaimed myself a pseudo intellectual in the Bitcoin space with a heavy emphasis on pseudo. I do dabble in a lot of different things from my studies. I've I've originally am a graphic designer focused on print works.
You may find that I had a hand in designing the Bitcoin Focus magazine, the first and second edition. Obviously, quite some logo design work within the Bitcoin space as well. I had the pleasure to work with people like Alex Gladstein to go to his BTC pay server skin, also for mister Antelopoulos.
Did some work with the guys from LMbits on some various side projects, quite some logo design. You can find bunch of stuff for free on my GitHub. The thing that has gotten the most traction, I would say, is probably the Notre Dundas logo that I made for a little group of hardcore Bitcoiners
from the Benelux area of Europe. It's been going around a lot, and I've seen it morph and transform. People are putting it on
Miners on little bit access brand note runners. I've seen artwork by making coins. And, yeah, it's been been really fun to watch something take off like that. If anybody wants to play around with it, you can find my GitHub under art design by SF, I think. It's still my old monologue and username.
As for Twitter, you can find me on Twitter's. I also control the jukebox bot account on Twitter and on as well as the radio account, which is currently the project I'm spending most time on.
Yeah. So that's in short. I did some writing as well for 21 feature books, which are a collection of works, short stories by 21 different authors per edition. I think there's two editions out now, and I recently heard the audio version of the second edition spoken by Adrian Lopez, I think. Beautiful voice.
And I've got to say I'm thrilled to have it come out. I think sometime next month, they will publish the second version in audio format. Nice. So that's one of these fun to share. Yeah. You've done some incredible work over the years. When we did first speak in 2021,
it was for '21 ism art and design, and we we were talking a lot about art. And you've done incredible work over the years and also the node runners involvement. John and I joke a lot of the time about being honorary node runners, but it's one of the coolest groups that I've seen, like, one of the the most hardcore groups I've seen and a
lot of incredible members. I wonder if you could just go into, like, the Node Runners group as a whole and how that started and what you guys are doing there because I think... Q, aren't you, and maybe Seth as well, out in Amsterdam soon?
Yes. I certainly am. Sorry. I was clicking around. I'd I'd navigate away weekly to look at my notes and just couldn't find the the window. But, yeah, I'll be in Amsterdam. Yeah. So you guys can take them under your wing of protection. It's like a little biker gang out there.
Yeah. Looking forward to it. The... I've I've been to the Amsterdam conference before. It was a a very good time. And, yes, I will confirm for Seth as well rather than hit the nightclub in the background, but he is there. I know that for a fact because he's on a a panel with myself as well.
I do like that you mentioned the the biker gang thing. I would like to protest to that description. A bicycle gang being in Holland. Maybe a bicycle gang being mostly Dutch. That is more succinct... More more to the point, maybe.
But I I I distinctly remember somebody joking at one point. Ah, yes. The note runner still like the Dutch Hells Angels of Bitcoin. I prefer the the cult within the cult, maybe. I think that's a bit more fitting.
However, I mean, health angels have literally sued people for infringement on their logo and I don't know what... Well, not an organization, it was just a bunch of friends that have one thing in common, which is thinking with Bitcoin stuff, talking to tech, trying to avoid price talk,
not messing about with too many shitcoins or non... No shitcoins at all, I should I should say. So the culture around Bitcoin is very well ingrained within the node runners. If I dare say it as a as a group, I wouldn't say it's a... Anybody
can be a node runner. Start running a node and a pinky promise you're doing it. You might be given a shield pin from one of us for your thankless efforts in keeping the network alive and breathing ticking. TikTok next block.
So you're Yeah. It's a meetup, and you've got you've got a big group, like, you know, off the top of my head, like, Brinky, Bertrigrew, Crown, obviously. Like, you've you've got some incredible Bitcoiners, like some of the best who does the... Exactly. Does the BT clocks.
If you like, I can share my screen and show you some of the stuff people are working on. Yeah. It's gonna be an incomplete list, but it'll be something at least... Let me just switch on the camera.
And then
let me let me just... Alright. So this is the plabprojects.com site. It's my page where... It's incomplete stills. If anybody out there wants to get featured on this page, I'll I'll put you in there as...
There's some tools, some Bitcoin only stuff, how to verify your seed sign up. This is mostly other people's projects, not necessarily people who are involved with the node runners as in the the group from the start, but from the wider Bitcoin first as well.
Arnhem Bitcoin started... The biggest Bitcoin city in The Netherlands, I would say, is Arnhem. There's gonna be an adopting Bitcoin next year again in R and M. I heavily advise people who can to join and visit it.
We recently also had the Node Runners conference of this year at the same location, which is an old prison prison block within Arnhem. It's like the the classic design of a Panopticon, the.
The space was absolutely beautiful. I think there might be... As this is some video from the first event we did in Amsterdam. Here you can see jewelry with his BT clocks.
Some people were there with lining taps. There was an auction with artwork this year as well, by the way. A lot of beautiful art was on display. Workshops, talks, you name it. It's a really cool experience to have this... I mean, it's true grassroots.
You can't you can't fake this fake this stuff. It's all top down. It's all people who have their regular lives and just see what is missing. Oh, I just saw Crown's artwork in the background. Yeah.
Mister Crown, who makes beautiful art as well Incredible. Very active within the space. He's done a lot for you guys as well. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. So... Yeah. It's it's it's an amazing group of people with...
And when it comes to other topics outside of Bitcoin, the opinions are very much dispersed and varied on stuff.
How how should we call fries, for instance? People call it patat or frijis. And it's a never ending discussion. It's so meaningless and senseless, basically, but it's a lot of fun to to appreciate the differences in each other as well.
So... Yeah. Do visit... This is noderunners.network. There is a pool that is run by our resident pool boy. It's... It'll take a bit time to load. The hash rate is very low, but
let's see. There was a block found some time ago by somebody running a BitX, I think, or a NerdQX or something. This person has not come forward yet. I do congratulate them, and I'm a little bit jealous as well.
But... Yeah. Let's see. What else do we have? Just doing some shout outs to Brinke in this case, who's been heavily working on his arcade machines, which are absolutely fantastic. Do check out a blitz with a z..
Network to try his arcade game online. He's been doing amazing work as well as is a jury with his. He's had some run ins with over the years who's got him kicked off GitHub and all this nonsensical drama, which I think should be laughed at because it's just silly.
It's just silly. Yeah. So that's that's a little bit about other projects people are working on. A special shout out also to Yvette, who's been doing a lot of work with Alan Bitts and to Ben Ark, who's... Who first inspired me to create...
Or to start a jukebox, basically. Ah, it was better than a little bit push you. If you wish. Let me just switch back to a different screen. So, yeah, you asked me about my my Twitter space.
Let me see.
Does it So Ben asked with the select options. Push for the Node Runner's radio. I didn't know that. Well, no. I wouldn't say he was the one to push for the radio, but he... I think the first time I came in contact with Adam Bits was at the very first Amsterdam conference.
Mhmm. And he did a little presentation about an Allen Bits extension where he made a jukebox that can interact with your Spotify account. Mhmm. And I would say some three to four years ago, I was in a period within my life which was a bit difficult, and
I would hazard to say that music saved my life in that regard. Nietzsche was right. If God had made the universe without music, you would have made a grave mistake. And listening to all kinds of music really helped me pull through that period.
And I wanted to share that with friends as well. So the Notre Dame Radio started out as something that was just me having my phone in front of my speakers and doing it in the NX space with really crappy audio.
And then from that, it evolved into a little telegram stream, eventually a website with a video feed. Who made the first edition of the TubeBox Lightning Bot, which was heavily inspired by Ben Ark's extension, but did not build upon that, did
run for a few years as one can say as a bit of a pirate project. At that time, I wasn't really aware of
the proper etiquette when dealing with these kinds of things, one... I guess one could say. So we leaned heavily on
some third party pieces of software, which wasn't maybe perfectly within their terms of engagement, I can say. And we've we've stepped away from that right now. Hero is still doing some work on the old bot, which had broken down at some point, but still holds some user funds,
which should become available again so people can withdraw from the old jukebox bot. I'll make sure that we'll put out a message on all the socials and in the telegram chat of the radio itself as well so people can can do that if they wish.
Of course, we would happily accept donations as well.
Yeah. But the project has evolved evolved a lot. I can go into that a bit more, but I would like to let others speak as well. So please let me know your thoughts. See if we can hear from John in Hey. In his truck. Here he is. Hey. I'm here in in my mobile podcast studio.
So I'd I'd... I've been fortunate enough to be a part of Node Runner's radio since the beginning. And just the the initial vibe there on the the Node Runners Radio. So if I kinda... And explain it a little bit, and the first iteration of Node Runners Radio was kind of this fusion between the Node Runners Radio Telegram group
and the jukebox and the jukebox controlling SF's player, which he he had loaded with lots of lots of his own songs. And my favorite thing was that the playlist grew as people submitted the songs that they wanted to hear.
So after a while, the the default playlist I'll have to pick a little bit. Personality of of the group. And one of my favorite things was as we were all listening to songs, we would play little dancing GIFs in the Telegram group, and it it just became kind of a meme.
There was one song in in particular, and it's called... I'm gonna do my best Dutch accent, where the Is this the De one? This is the one. Yeah. The the the, like, rapper on that song, Donnie, looks exactly like Bert DeGroote.
So we made we made GIFs with a little, you know, the the guy Dan... The Donnie guy dancing and holding some some tulips. And, I I don't know. It was just a a really great experience, those early days of NodeRunners radio... NodeRunners radio. Let me see if I can pull it up in the in the chat on-site.
I think the website is still full screen. There's a because Giphy at some point went a bit to shit and a lot of Bitcoin stuff was deleted. Let me see if Yeah. You you have to you have to go directly to Tenor because Tenor pulled its API for for everybody else. But if you go to Tenor, that that bunker box
Bert Degroot GIF should still be in there. I'll I'll ask somebody in it... In in the Neutronus Telegram group. Let me just tag Limburger to Prinky and Bert. Someone
please post the...
Alright. I'll... I just sent a message to the note on us Telegram group. I think it should be on screen on the website now too, as you can see.
So, yeah, maybe one of the guys will throw it on the site, and it should pop up within the chat box on screen and the chat window here in a little while. If anybody is listening from the note on us, I think so probably.
Yeah. But sorry to interrupt. You were going on about that little moment in time, which was indeed a lot of a lot of fun. Yeah. Can... So can you explain the the mechanism of how the the jukebox worked at first and and what it looks like now?
Yeah. So at first, it was a bot built by HeroVK. You can still find it on his GitHub. I think it's GitHub by p three a m. And it was basically a piece of software that would interact with both my Spotify.
So it would become a remote control for my Spotify. I I have to crack one thing because when people added music and still add music via the jukebox, it doesn't mean it automatically gets added to the...
There is the GIF. Hi, John. You found it. Yeah. This guy looks very much like an amazing doppelganger. Exactly.
And that's that's still funny. Yeah. I totally forgot about that. Thank you for reminding me. Anyway, so when somebody requests a piece of music, it doesn't automatically get added to the playlist. Because while I do have a very wide and varied taste in music, I I too am somewhat selective of what I appreciate and what I what I do not.
So I will still
manage the background playlist. So when nobody is using the the jukebox at the moment and there has nothing in a queue,
You don't want silence while people are listening. So there is a background playlist which is heavily curated by me, and it keeps changing. If I do hear something new that I appreciate, I can just add it to the to the playlist, which at this time, everything is run locally.
We have our own library. I think it's about seven and a half terabytes of music right now, of which maybe a month's worth is on steady rotation. But the total library is much bigger than...
We we don't come close to Spotify's library, which I think is something like 300 terabytes of music. I... One, I don't have the disk space. Two, we need to source the music. So right now, if you go to the current jukebox, you can see that we have a couple of lanes.
For instance, you can select all lanes and just shuffle through what is available. It will display a random selection from the total library. You can also select the value for value lane.
This is pretty recently, and we finally managed to integrate the awesome project of Wavlik within the the jukebox. I've talked to some of the artists to verify that if one indeed pays for a a Waffleck song, they do receive their amount.
So what happens if I... Oh, let me just see. Let's just pick something randy... Random... Something handy? Did I say handy? That's my dirty mind at work. It's a joyful life. So
if you if you tap something, you will get this little window with an invoice. You can add a dedication of a mess... Message. So let's do a shout out to the.
Let me... So I think I put a tab in there. And let me just quickly... Well, maybe somebody in the... So some listener will do us the favor and scan the QR that is on screen, and we can see lightning in in action over a distance.
I'll just leave this open for a bit, see if something happens. Otherwise, I'll I'll just do it myself. And what you will see happen if somebody does make a request or supports the ship, which will go straight into our donation fund.
So let me just do a little donation. Oh, somebody paid it. Awesome. Thank you very much, kind Anon. Much appreciated. I'll do this one myself real quickly. I don't know what happens if I switch. Almost got it with my my cake wallet. This little cake wallet plug for Seth. Be... Yeah. Very cool. Very cool. Let me just
do this one real quick. Oh, that was you. Was it q? Guilty. Guilty. Sneaky. Sneaky. Sneaky. Beep me to it. Beep me to it. Ah, now you see the site has changed. It says a waffle... Waffle request has made.
And so what happens in the back end, it will stream through LMbits. And a 100% of the 210 sets paid will go straight to Waffleck, and they will give 90% to the original artist. How they divide it between their body musicians and collaborators that have worked on the song that is their prerogative.
And, yeah, 5% kickback will come to the radio. And all the fees you see for requesting a song is just basically an anti spam prevention matter... Anti spam method. We normally have set the price for a ship library track on 21 sets, which is what right now. €1.5 cent,
a dollar cent, something something something really low. You do see some changes once in a while. As you can see, this track is a bit longer, so the price will gradually go up as a track becomes longer. So for instance, for a twenty minute track, which there are some of, you will have to pay a bit higher anti spam fee.
I will heavily advise people who are tuned in to go to noterunnersradio.com. Let me just put it on the site on... In in the little chat bar here so you can see how it's written.
And you can play around with your jukebox. Play some music. Obviously, don't shy out. And if you wish, you can do a little shout out. Try and keep it clean. I do filter out some nasty comments.
Obviously, spam and advertising is not allowed, and we'll... We try and keep that kind of stuff out of it. If you do happen to listen to our... On the website, there's a few handy options that you might want to know about. For instance, you can
tune into the muse... I have it on mute now. If anybody wants to listen, please turn it on for yourself because I don't wanna mess with the audio of this fine podcast. You can go to the website, neutronasradio.com, and you can either listen to the video feeds, which will be a bit more bandwidth heavy for you on the other side.
But you can also select the audio only piece and select a bit rate for that. Obviously, real audio files want as lossless as possible of an experience as possible. So I would select three twenty. Let me... That for you. You can open it in your dedicated player.
You can also load it into... Say, if you've got a small device that... On VLC, for instance, you can open, which is a great piece of open source video software I recommend everybody to use.
You can load it into that. We've got an RSS feed that will show the history of the last twenty four hours. You can even pick your own background if you use this little icon in here. And we have a preselection of of things you can you can choose or put it on shuffle.
Or if you wish, you select this option, and you can upload your own background. Say, for your own meetup, you wanna start it in some sense that gives a bit more at... Local atmosphere for your personal meetup or venue or whatever you are doing.
Yeah. You can do that as well. I usually put mine in shuffle and have a little bit of variation while I listen to the radio, add songs, and post GIFs in the Telegram group. SF, I was wondering if if you could talk about
how this started with Heroes bot. You know, for instance, in in the BloodMiner chat, we used to have the Telegram bot where you had your own wallet in there, and you can tip each other, and and you can pay for each other's songs and, load up other people's wallets using the the DJ function
and how Hero initially coded that, but then you you transitioned to this this new this new system that you have and what tools that you used in order to say, alright. Well, Hero, you're you're busy now, and I need to take this over, and I'm gonna vibe code it myself. How how did you learn how to do all this?
Well, I'm terrible at looking at big walls of code. So I can do some basic HTML and CSS and some other rudimentary... Very rudimentary stuff. I'm just an ape banging rocks together, man. So it wasn't until AI got sufficiently powerful enough that I could start vibe coding myself.
Did an amazing job with the first iteration of the jukebox, but he's working on different projects as well for some reasons I won't get into here. I suggest you talk to him... Himself, by the way, because he's doing a lot of awesome work on Bitcoin beer taps that work on Lightning.
And he's been going to... Together with Arno from Bitcoin Delta to various conferences as well. In Prague, you've probably... If you've been in in Amsterdam and the Node Runners conferences and some other places as well, you've probably run into some of his work.
He's not the only player in that field together with Arno. There's there's some other people doing it as well. Sven Sven, he's a he's a cool guy. He's got his own lightning powered beer taps as well.
So... Yeah. But do do invite the hero. He can tell you more about how he went about creating the first iteration. As it comes to the second iteration, I lean heavily on AI. After the first hype died down on the claw bots, I did try to mess around with that and get things running
locally as much as possible. But, honestly, I couldn't understand how people got it working. For me, it was just a endless stream of non functionality. So at a certain point, I abandoned that, and I employed some funds from the donation jar, of which you can see the status here on the top right of this website.
It's... I employed some funds from that to get subscription to... I think it's the the cloud one by Entropic. And, honestly, it's been like magic. I did have to exfiltrate the thing a few times from some sensitive areas on the server where it should not be.
It does seem like it finally understands where it should and shouldn't go and actively helps me keep it in line. But it's a black box to me, honestly. I... The future will prove if it's a smart move or not. I hope the AI topic in general will be a major boon to humanity.
And at some point, maybe evolutionary will emerge with with this technology in some fashion or another to keep our species going. We've got two people on this that basically already merged, Seth and Q are pretty much. They might have won't be both of AI at this point. Absolutely ridiculous.
Just need to get the chip implanted, and I'm good to go. You would as well. I know you would. I mean, we've been cyborgs from the moment we started wearing clothes and putting on glasses, one could argue.
One could even say the... You see... When you when you you you squash your first book as a child unknowingly, destroying maybe another conscious part of this world. Everybody's a programmer the moment they start interacting with the world around them.
That's the the consequence of living in a world that has a singular arrow of time and a space time
full of entropy. So... Yeah. But let's not wax too too much on the philosophical side of those things, how interesting it may be. Yeah. You will find when you when you tap on the the donation bit a...
Which I try to keep up to date, how this... How it works with donations, where they go, what happens when there's a livestream. For instance, we had a little livestream yesterday, and what you will notice when a DJ goes live, one can make an account by going here, register as a guest DJ.
They will get their own little page where they can say, oh, I have DJ equipment at home or a studio, so I can also host. Maybe I can host a band doing live music. They can all set their own personal lining wallet, which brings me back to the first iteration of the box bots because you mentioned you can send other people sets by
replying to a telegram message with the forward slash DJ command and sponsor their jukebox use basically for for a while. So within the stringent... Ever least increasingly stringent rules of the European machine.
It's it's it's hard for anything that transmits and holds value. So trying to stay out of legal trouble, we've moved away from this setup. Everything now has to be self custodial. So if you do want to interact with the current bot, you will have to use your own lightning wallet or
something that connects to it. Let me see where I... Yeah.
But that currently works just fine, I think. Am I still sharing the correct screen? Let me see. Yeah. That's fine. Yeah. You can check on on the progress we've made. Recently, we... We've added Nostril chat.
Currently, I don't have my Nostrad enabled in this particular browser window. But if you do have an extension at home that enables communication with the Nostrad network, The chat window... Oh, wait. I do have it enabled. So the chat window will feature a little chat.
Hello. And that is a recent addition to the to the website. You can also interact with the bot over Nostrand and x besides Telegram at this point. And, yeah, it's it's it's been... The last few months have been a explosion of progress on on that front.
I can show you some examples of how you can work with the bot. Let me just see if I have, for instance, on Twitter. Let me enable the correct... If anybody wants to jump in here while I search for the right screen.
Hello? Yeah. Sorry. I was I was talking on mute then. I... Just yet while you're loading that, I think I remember seeing a tweet from you a couple of weeks ago with some issues with Misty Breeze.
And I noticed that you mentioned LMbits earlier. Are are those two things interlinked? Like, was the switch to LMbits instigated because of the issues you were having with Breeze? I'm just curious what went on there. If you could walk us walk us through that.
I don't really recall what the...
Well, what this is exactly about. You'll have to forgive my shoddy memory. But the first attrition of the jukebox and the second one has leaned heavily on LMbits from the get go. I'm not personally familiar with the Breeze, what do you call it, SDK software development toolkit.
So I won't comment about that. As I said, I'm just in a banging rocks together, and AI has made things... I can play dictator and tell the AI what to build for me. Right? So Okay. Well And it's I was doing a when I was doing a bit of research, I saw you tweeting Breeze with some issues with Misty Breeze, and I didn't know whether that was
the the back end that you guys were using to power the radio station and whether that was causing you some issues and maybe it was linked to the Bolt's exchange going down, but maybe I've read way too much into that.
Yeah. I think you've read way too much into that. As a as a dabbler, and I do try and experiment with various things. So for instance, with the whole liquid debacle the other other day, it happened
just at the time of... That I was finally thinking, okay. Let's give this liquid thing a try, do some swaps, see how it works and what happens. And then, of course, the hack came about, and now swaps are still frozen. But Adam recently told me in a reaction to one of my tweets that... On notes, I guess, want you to say currently,
that they're close to getting things back up and running. But it's a lesson. Right? Stay away from all the shitcoin y things and just stick to on chain Bitcoin and Lightning in my my opinion.
Let me just quickly disable the sharing as I try and grab something relevant for me to show you guys.
Yeah. Okay. Let's put back the camera. So for instance, if you wanna use the the jukebox on on on Twitter or on X, you can just type any note and at some point, tag jukebox and a debot.
And then you have to add the word play and then say, piece of music smells like teen spirit. And if you wanna append a shout out, that will get added to the... Let me just tag me to shout out.
Sorry to... I'll tag myself so I won't bother anybody else. What's up?
The Jubox L and D bot should reply to this message in a little bit, and it will give you a link to a... Well, we'll we'll we'll hopefully see it in a little bit. This is all fairly recent progress.
The same goes for getting that to work on Nostoc, by the way. It's the same principle. Of course, the handle for the jukebox will be will be different on Nostoc. I think it's just at juke... Jukebox, and you will find it. Or if you search on Nostoc for Notre Dundas radio jukebox, you'll you'll get to the working second iteration
of the... It's the first iteration of the Nostril bot, I should say. Anyway, it looks like we've got a reply. Let me refresh the page.
Pick your song in Zap. It will give you a link, and you will notice that the price is a bit higher on this end of of things and that you cannot add a message as you already added the shout out via appending it on your original note.
Let me just quickly pay this one.
When... While you're paying that, when's this next conference coming up, the one in Arnhem? Did you say That one will be in 2027. But if you wanna get a bite of the radio and the jukebox and some more explanation, for me, I will be doing a talk next month at a bit fest.
So I think you guys will be there. Yeah. I'm gonna I'm gonna join you guys, and we can... Yeah. It's been a long time since I've had the honor of shaking all your hands and giving you a hug and sharing a beer together, but I'm really looking forward to it.
That... That's gonna be a good one. Sorry to disappoint, but I think I'll be the only ungovernable representative on-site. Yeah. I wasn't gonna say because I didn't want you to cancel your flights, but I I do think it is just gonna be Cuba, unfortunately.
Well, you can be the the delegation. Spirit. Yeah. Spirit. We'll No. It does look... It looks like a really good one, though. If if I hadn't escaped The UK, I'd have definitely been there.
Cool. That's fun to see. So some some of your listeners are actively engaging with the the jukebox as we speak. It'll show up here. And... Yeah. That's... Before before we run out of time, I I want to be sure that we talk about the the DJ thing and live music.
For instance, I may be releasing this a little bit early, but there's a high, high likelihood next year in Nashville, concurrent with the the, the Bitcoin conference there that baseload and myself and a few other wannabe musicians will be holding a a live music event, where I will be the lead singer, and bass will be playing,
bass. Go figure. And we'll be playing a number of songs, and we would like to livestream that on Node Runner's radio. How how do we go about fine? How how does that mechanism work? Alright. So let me just pull up a recording of a a live sesh... I think the first ever live session that I did was some years ago, and I had...
It was still very rudimentary. I still don't have all the equipment necessary, like proper microphones and stuff to stream actual bands. Because the more instruments you have, the more mics you will need. You need to mix it properly and stuff.
But if you do have that equipment and experience, you already obviously know how to use OBS. So in that case, I can just give you a... The information to my RTMP server. And let me just play this real quick. I'll just move forward a bit maybe when there's a...
Oh, is the music coming through? I think it should be muted in general. It's not coming through. Okay. Very good. We it. We can see it. We're just kinda People people can can visit the note runners radio YouTube YouTube channel themselves, and there will be a few recordings of live sessions sessions on there,
and you can see how it works. This is an oldie. Let me pull up a new one because this one's still used... If somebody was hosting, they would put up their personal QR. Currently, it works in such a fashion that this is a bit more modern where we have the general QR code to
the livestream event. And this will pull if if... Let me just go to the to the website. So once a live session starts, I can switch a lever basically on my end to change the behavior of the website.
The video feeds will be replaced with the... A type of video that you see now. This has also been improved over over time. Currently, it looks a bit better than what you're see... Seeing right here.
But say there are a few DJs. The one that's currently playing will get highlighted in the top left here.
And one... Once somebody... A listener donates some sets via the QR, they can, again, append a message if they wish. That's... That message will be displayed on screen for everybody to see. If somebody who's playing live or DJing live at that time happens to see it, they might do a shout out, but sometimes people...
Because they're busy, of course, with their... Don't expect to do any requests during live sets. The main goal of the radio is, of course, to get rid of dictator DJs. But once in a while, we do like to host some live sessions where people can enjoy a DJ set or multiple DJ sets.
What happens in the back end when somebody donates, so this QR will change to support the DJ, support the ship. This button will also change to support the DJs. You can see here what has been going straight to DJs over these past couple of months while we were doing live sessions.
Many thanks to all the donators, by the way. Without you, I couldn't keep this thing running as we do pay monthly fees to legacy copyright collection ages... Agencies that should distribute those funds to original artists that are listed with them.
Now the main downside of that legacy system is that for smaller artists who get little to no airtime, but of which we do feature a lot of smaller music artists on the background playlist and the jukebox itself as well.
They will be tend to left out because it's... It becomes... Smaller your reaches as a musician, the less feasible it is for legacy systems to
hold a... To to to profit... Or at least even if it's nonprofit. Right? At a certain at a certain point, you just hit a wall due to physics and time constraints, and you you cannot possibly distribute to everybody.
If somebody only gets one play in a year, yeah, you can imagine how that works. So that's why I highly recommend if you're musician, make a Waffleague account. Get your value for value stuff going.
I've currently set the Waffleague price at 210 sets. If you are a musician on Waffleek and you think, well, I think it should be more. I think it should be less. Maybe this should be implemented in a different way.
Maybe people should be able to choose for themselves when they play a value for value song as it currently is on WavLake itself. Whatever the case might be, please send us your argument. Join join the telegram chat. You can tag at notaros f m or plapriel in there to get our attention quickest.
You can also email to notetrunners-radio@proton.me. I will respond via that as well, although that might be a little bit slower. Yeah. So, anyway, back to the store when something goes live.
If somebody donates while while there is a live session going, the sets will temporarily accumulate during the live session. Now why don't they go to the DJs or band members directly? Because I think, again, theoretically, it will be possible to game the system in in that sense.
And there might be some social interplays that might incentivize less than
decent behavior. So I've chosen to first let the donation jar during a live session build up. Once the live session has ended, then the total pot will be distributed among those that wish to take part in it. Because there are still some people out there that want nothing to do with the entire, air quotes, crypto
scene, be it Bitcoin or something else. So, yeah, we... You have to respect that. And if somebody does not put in their own lightning address, the others who did will get their part. Now, currently, I must mention that we do take a big cut as the Node Runners Radio and the jukebox project is still pretty much in its early days.
I've had some unfortunate hardware failures over the year... Years, and the the current system is strung together by bits and pieces that I've collected from failed systems in the past. It is working, but it lacks some redundancy.
There is no PSU yet. I did manage to use the generous donations of some people to get a few extra hard drives. Pieces of the thing were running on drives that are, like, fifteen years old or maybe even more.
And that's... Well, the potential failure there is is quite quite high at a certain... The longer time goes on. So, yeah, now now I think we've got one twenty four terabyte disk as a redundant backup somewhere else and a 28 terabyte disk that still has some room to grow.
If you are a musician and or somebody who wants to donate to us, be it music files, We are very welcome to accept gifts in that regard. I do hope at some point that maybe websites like Bandcamp will give the possibility to pay with sets.
And if they if they would do that and open an API point, I can imagine opening a lane in in here where we have now Waffleague, the ship library. I hope to add this week, by the way, a creative comments zero and public domain lane lane as well.
There are about 350,000 songs that will be added, so we'll we'll hit the million mark of original pieces of music very soon. I still need to measure the loudness of these tracks and maybe add some gain or remove some gain in such a way that it does not mess with the inherent dynamics within a piece of music.
Yeah. Now back to
back to the live live sessions. Yeah. So the the sets will be collected. This... The measure of sets that have gone to value for value, Waflaig artists. I do hope people try to experiment more with the Waflaig part and support the pioneer that are
now experimenting with this new type of new... I say new, but it's it's been a whole... Around a while. The... Is it Adam Curry? Adam Curry Tim Curry. What's his name again? The final Curry principle. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. A really cool initiative, and I'm very happy that we've got it working.
Now for the for the future of the project, I do... I mean, if you look at the logo, it's called Notronus FM. We are not broadcasting on FM or AM or you name it. To get a frequency on which to broadcast on real radio waves. It's...
It goes by a auction kind of auction
kind of deal where once in a while, a state or a government or some agency will have people place a bid. And these things tend to get expensive very quickly. We're talking millions and millions in some cases of of cockbugs.
But it's it's... Hopefully, it will become a self fulfilling prophecy at some point, and we can actually do real radio waves and not just Internet broadcast. In that case, the... One of the end goals of the station and of the project in general will be to silently append the state of the network as well.
I think people are... One of the most arguments is, oh, but what if the Internet goes down? How how... What are you gonna do with your Bitcoin then? True. I think the argument has been debunked quite a lot, but I can still imagine a world where you guys have heard of the Carrington event.
Right? No. No. Okay. Back in the days when people were using a telegram over wire, to... Postcode over wire to send telegrams around the world. There was a quite a bit bit... Big solar storm, and there are reports you can still find now of people getting shocked
via the telegram machines and things breaking down or even people being able to hear messages from other far flung or disconnected places on that network. There are some people who believe that the sun goes through some cycles, and it will... I mean, just not too long ago, a few months ago, there was an
instance where there was a lot of solar activity and people could see the northern lights around the Equator even. Sad to say, I I personally missed missed going out and seeing it. But some friends of mine have seen it all over the globe at that time.
If for whatever reason the sun does become an issue and starts to mess with electronics on a regular base... Basis, the technology of creating a radio receiver and a sender boils down to getting some copper wire, making an antenna, and adding a speaker. I'm I'm
simplifying things, but the technology has been around for a long time and Mhmm. Is readily available. I think if more node runners radio type things do pop up in the future And seeing that block time is on average ten minutes, and we are talking about what four megabytes of data, hopefully, it will be possible to silently append
new blocks as they come in and have that transmit next to the music as well while people are the DJ, while the crowd is the DJ most of the times. And having the software be GPL v three will hopefully ensure that whomever is gonna fork off and build the wrong thing with it will do it in such a way that the system remains
as transparent as it can be. Maybe there's an operator that will start skimming funds. That will be, of course, on lightning, a bit hard to keep track of.
But I think, yeah, there will be there will be... Come a time when if this does take off, a natural equilibrium will be reached. People can move to another radio, start their own. For sure. I do I do imagine a moment in time where original producers of music will use open time stamps.
I think it's... What's his name again? Who created this? Thought thought thought something. Very cool project, I think. Okay. I can imagine you hashing your piece of work onto the Bitcoin time chain before releasing it and thus having it... A timestamp that you are indeed the first one, at least to publish it in that sense.
Mhmm. When that time comes and people use that to add to Waffleague or to the jukebox library itself, the... It it will be a messy time. There will be people trying to misuse that and say, take the entire Michael Jackson library, hash it for themselves. And so there will be there will be some some
some difficulties, I think, in that sense. And I think legacy copyright licensing agencies and institutions will have a role to play in that as well. So... Yeah. It's gonna be There's there's an official invitation to any legacy copyright holder to get in touch and
think with us about this issue because I I think it's highly interesting and crucial to work towards these kind of things. Certainly is.
So much to cover. We could carry on for hours here. We we have hit a hard stop of an hour. We've just gone over it now. So Yeah. I know Q has to run and and go and do some super coder stuff, but it's been awesome having you on and having Thank you for having respect for what you guys do. And,
