these pleb miners who are innovating and stopping the centralization that would otherwise inevitably happen. And it isn't something to be taken lightly, neither is the privacy side. And where I used to flick on Twitter four or five years ago and feel hope

and be like, oh, yeah, there's a group of people who are thinking the same way as me. I actually now flick on Twitter and I see outside of that group in the Mestradell and a few of the privacy groups actually see despair because I just think there's a bunch of orange flag waving, pretend anarchists want to be cunts

who are just getting in the way they're saying things like freedom money. They don't know what it means and they don't really care and it's beginning to piss me off. So I wish they'd all fuck off and we can get on with the job and try and make sure that the world is better for our children than it is for us at the moment.

So now I have machines all over the fucking place like I've had before. So here's the base. This is years ago. The base setup was S9s in the garage. Just running an Iraq with the garage door open.

I don't care about all the noise. Then I went to something more fancy. This server cabinet type thing that had four S9s in there. And they just kind of exhausted in there. And then from the top, I would pull off on eight inch ducts into inline fans and exhaust the heat out that way.

The boxes insulated. That was probably my best setup for efficiency and sound and exhausting the air out. Well, once I went to S19s, then you couldn't exactly put four S19s in there. I went with two and the reason that I put these things in a box is because you get a little bit greater of a delta T.

A greater increase in temperature in the box, not in the machines themselves. They still run as cool as if they were out in the open air, but in the box itself. So the heat that you're taking off of the box is a little bit hotter than if you had just put a shroud on the front of a machine and extracted it there.

So that was what two years ago that I built that box for S19s and I had these intakes in the back of them that were connected to silencers which sort of look like stacks like on a semi truck or a lorry.

Is that kind of what? A lorry. Oh my God. A lorry. A lorry. All right. Sorry about your lorry. That's all right. Then there were these filtered intakes like K&N air filters that you put on your truck that are supposed to give you like one 1000s of a horsepower.

That was like my home heating hashing hot rod and it was the same premise that you had eight inch takeoffs off the top. And from there I was able to connect them to individual inline fans that I can control the temperatures and direct them to different parts of the house through ducting.

One goes here in my sunroom. That's why in the wintertime everybody hangs out in here because it's like 80 degrees in the sunroom. And another one just goes into the basement to heat the basement.

But one of the outlets is very near my laundry chute so that makes it up to the second floor. That's always been like a base setup. If I needed more heat I had a couple in the attic that I used to direct through an existing duct into the bathroom.

But that was never very effective and I always felt like I was getting like shitty attic air being pumped into the second floor. That was never really hot on that and I end up just getting rid of that all together and just exhausting the attic once out of the top of the attic.

When you say shitty attic air do you mean because of insulation coming through or you mean like the rat infested? Yes, my house is rat infested. What do you mean by shitty air then? Well it's not a conditioned space.

You know unless you have some sort of supply and return you don't have a conditioned space. That's a good thing I could say is I have two. Both sides have very very large gable vents there in the attic.

So it is more fresh air but yeah you're right the insulation up there the fact that it's not a conditioned space. The house is very old. There's rock wool up there and I'm sure there's some mold within the rock wool.

So I was just never hot on that idea. This year I came up with a new design where instead of like in the basement with the DAX and the semi truck design in that server cabinet I'm going to keep the machines outside of an enclosed space.

So right now in the attic the machines are just like set on a board. And the board is like suspended from the ceiling of the attic with uni strut and all thread. And so there's two machines up there sitting on a board.

But then they get pumped into a larger box through two eight inch ducts. And in that box on the side I have eight inch exhausts out to individual inline fans that I can all control centrally.

In total there's three inline fans on this box that I can control the speeds on individually at a central location in the second floor hallway. The third of the exhausts is connected to a very large like two foot carbon filter eight inch carbon filter that goes out of the box eight inch carbon filter into an eight inch duct.

And then it goes into a cavity above my shower in the bathroom and exhausts out in normal vents. Like I'll have to take a picture and put it up on Twitter but it just looks like normal four inch by ten inch vents up there.

And I can control how much heat is dumped into the bathroom which is very near my cold air return. We're dumping carbon filtered air into the bathroom. The bathroom is near the cold air return from my central air.

So whenever excess heat in the bathroom is really toasty like you go take a shit in there you don't want to leave. Oh really? Fantastic, yeah you're talking half hour long shits now. Oh really I'm doing the same but in the cold because I've boiled a diet we haven't had heating for a week.

Zero, zero hot water, zero heating. It's fucking delightful. You can come and take a shit at my house. I would love to shit in your house. It's just a bit of a long trip isn't it? Yeah yeah I guess so I wasn't thinking about the logistics.

You're right that was silly of me to say. No I would love to and I really appreciate the offer and I hope that one day that happens. Someday life rolls shit at John's house. Just in his house I didn't say where.

You don't have to guess. So what I've done you know this is this is a fourth year of home heating bullshit. Listen there's a lot smarter people out there than me that have this in a in a hydronic form.

And later on in the episode we're going to talk about a spaces that we did the other day. Some really smart home heating folks that are using immersion and hydronics. Like Bob from home Bitcoin immersion channel and Schnitzel who we've we've spoken to.

I feel like we probably know 10 people that have the immersion thing down a little bit better. Me I'm slower to it. I don't know what my mental problem is with committing to this. But I can do a lot of things with with air cooled.

And now I have a lot of control with with the air cooled stuff. So I see it is the same thing with building this box. Well that's my heat storage battery. And instead of taking things from one place to another.

Hydronically. I'm just doing it with air with controlling these inline fans. It's very simple. If something breaks it's not the end of the world. There's not going to be any leaking of immersion fluid.

I can easily take this shit apart. The initial capital expenditure and all this is just some plywood and some some ready made eight inch stuff. It's a lot more plebe. I remember when we were talking originally about immersion and these different types of cooling systems.

I seem to remember the fluid was really expensive. And then you have to have the radiators and build out this whole system. It sounded to me like I was listening to it and being like yeah that's not for me.

That's quite involved. I'm sure once you've got it set up it's brilliant. And as these things become more readily available I guess pre-built. Or like you have a parts list that you can easily put together.

And maybe if you were putting in a new build or something like that where you didn't have an existing system. It would make a lot more sense but it sounds like what you've got is pretty fucking good in doing the job.

Yeah it's really off the shelf Amazon parts. We'll go over this in greater detail what other people are doing when we talk about that space is that we did. But that was something that we brought up.

And a lot of those guys feel like we're super super super close to integrating this DIY and off the shelf ecosystem. Part of the conversation there was once we get like a large manufacturer and hashing to heating and I have had this conversation many times.

Like man if we could just onboard carrier if we can onboard like my system Unico or space path. Just some large name and speak to one of their engineers. Like go in there and have a meeting.

Have a proof of concept. Show them that this is practical. If we could just get a little bit of help from the industrial folks. I think a lot of this DIY off the shelf divide that we have will come a little bit closer.

Yeah because it would drive the cost down massively. I do see it happening from a non technical aspect. You look at it and you go well the maths works if you do enough units.

What probably holds them back is a lot of the views of Bitcoin and also them thinking oh it's you know they're not looking at it like we are where we're like it's not fucking going anywhere.

They're looking at it like we don't know what's going to happen with this. This is risky once you look and you understand how much infrastructure there is then you start to understand I know this is pretty secure with the topic that we've covered many times on the show.

All of these distributed proof of concepts being shown to normies being shown to your dad or dead buddy or you got a friend from work. I come on over and look at this system. It will emanate from here but I think it will also come from larger institutional minors as well.

I was recently at an event the Ohio blockchain council me and base load and Sarah and many were all there. I got to speak to somebody that I spoke to at disrupt.

Well boy if I can't remember the name of this company I'll get more info actually want to tour the facility but there's this place in Marietta Ohio where they are harnessing the waste heat and they also have the cooperation with county and the local manufacturers there and the oil and gas industry.

They're not just this stranded in the middle of nowhere mine that uses he capture they're actually actively working with oil and gas companies to show the industrial uses of harnessing waste heat.

So we're coming from both ends we're coming from the large institutional minors the industrial minors and from the pleb minor and hopefully we can meet the normies in the middle and they get to see all of the the uses not not just heating your bathroom to where you're comfortably taking a shit your English friend wants to come over and

shit there. Not there just in the house. It's like a game of hide and seek.

The pleb minors there aren't that many and times are pretty tough you can't have all the weight on their shoulders and this is where the innovation is coming from and where I look to for inspiration but you do need normies to be able to make a decision on having a heating system

that is using the waste heat from minors not because they want KYC free corn not because they think oh this is the right thing for the future and help decentralize this network none of that just to go.

Do I go for this system which gives me some money back and effectively works out cheaper over the long run or do I go for this one which is worse and it just needs to be at that level where they're making the decision and then the second thing that goes into it is.

You don't want that system to then be like okay one manufacturer has some sort of government deal where every unit that has sold has to be going into a certain pool and then everyone has to KYC and then it's a cucked version.

You won't defend all of it but you have to fight the battles that you can win and try and make it so that people can use it how they'd want to in a more sovereign way otherwise it isn't really any better than it being in a warehouse.

I think it's also important to present this material to normies in that way like you mentioned like you can get some heat and you can get some Bitcoin which is worth this that's about all they can understand you start rolling at them like we're fighting globalists

and radiant heat and whatnot but man you know all those miners are running and you're exclusively on mining for heat it's very staticy so what I did in the box and the attic the plywood box was I put a big stockpot

which Sarah isn't particularly happy about back to the wife thing but I'll buy her another stockpot and I can fill the stockpot externally with water to humidify the air a little bit better

that's neat John yeah I know it is Max I thought so too another guess that we had on the spaces was Bob from the home Bitcoin immersion mining channel I think I'm getting that right it's a YouTube channel where every two weeks he updates you on his immersion build at home even as things like tell you what mistakes that he's made

hey I built these dry cooling fans built these homemade dry coolers that have radiator fans from your car and their car radiators and I set them on top of each other and they don't really work or they're a little bit noisy

and he shows you what adjustments that he's made in part of his system recently on the episode he didn't flush everything out and clean it and so therefore his backflow is check valves got clogged

and something wasn't you know going through it a different circuit so we spoke to Bob for quite a while and he explained things and one thing that he touched on and we spoke about this previously in the show is the divide between DIY and off-the-shelf solutions

he thinks and as a lot of us do think that that divide is tightening that some of these like DCX he's got a DCX system there's also fog hashing there are organizations out there that have more off-the-shelf ready-made units

so maybe not this year but perhaps next year there will be something more off-the-shelf another person that we spoke to was Schnitzel who has done a lot over the past few years to get the home heating on immersion thing up and running

so he came on to update the crew on his newest innovations in immersion and this is now his third version of his his bitcoin house heater designs we talked about him even coming up here to my house to help me with his build

I've got everything pretty well dialed in at my home and now it's time to see if we can't get this working in other people's houses and the reason is that is because when you're trapped in your own home all the time you know exactly where everything is I know where every pipe is in this house where every wire is in this house

and Sarah says that sometimes nobody else could live in this house but me I'd have to have a whole giant list full of instructions if I ever die on how to operate this house and so he was saying the same thing when he's got his stuff dialed in but he's got to be able to plug and play this into other people's homes

so he brought up the idea of going into somebody else's house and see if we can't replicate the same things so we'll see how over time is this winter it's pretty shitty currently but I need a few more components for my build a dry cooler some pumps

of course pipe some manifolds other fittings and such if I'm able to get that if it's a good winter with overtime I might take him up on his offer to help me implement the immersion system into my existing hydronic system so that was a good talk with both of the immersion guys

our buddy LTP mining misfit even came on the faces to talk about residential demand response programs that's something that a large a lot of these institutional minors have access to is demand response programs we spoke about on our last episode riot

making X amount of dollars on demand response programs and even selling energy back to the grid that they had already pre purchased and sell it back at a higher price please don't jump on me base load if I messed any of that wording up but you know what I mean

institutional minors have access to demand response programs and we don't but he's involved in some things where you have residential demand response programs where you can put in an interrupt in between your AC compressor and your panel

and if you just allow the power company to do that and I know a lot of people are saying well that's cooked in this net yeah sure but if somebody wants to take advantage of different demand response programs you can really clean up on them

especially if you are a home minor and your margins are much much thinner than a larger minor if your residential rates suck which as mine for instance are going to go up in March and I won't really be able to home mine the same way especially after it starts to warm up

you know April May I have to do something different residential demand response programs might put you back into the game so he came on to talk about that Rick was on being as gentlemanly as he possibly can we spoke a lot about Rick's space heater

but if you just go on crypto cloaks and pull up his space heater PDF where he has very detailed instructions on how to build drone space heater and put the new Knoxville fans on and put it into his space heater housing he has a lot of data on home heating and rationale for it

so it was good to speak to Rick there he also shared that Nick from Kaboom racks that sent him 100 S9s which I think he only wanted to get 25 but here come a pallet of S9s on his doorstep so he is working as fast as he can to equip those for home space heaters

so if you want if that's your entry point is a ready-made space heater thing that somebody else built that's on 120 volts go for it contact Rick and see if it's if it's right for you

Avril from Altair also shared his new design that he calls a bit chimney and he's going to be actually getting the new K Pro into the bit chimneys so that will be neat to see what kind of efficiency he gets with the 77 chip board K Pro's in 120 volt unit

another 120 volt single board design guys came up sat stacking pleb came on to talk about his stealth minor that's a single board unit but it doesn't look like a minor it's like an enclosure with a bunch of fans on it which which is kind of cool

but Travis Pickle came up to talk about his designs and mining on 120 volts it was a very productive spaces sounds like yeah we even got into grounding which was which was kind of cool we got into electrical engineering theory

what was happening is we got to talk about grounding in all of these chassis for the miners the aluminum chassis they are part of the ground so when you take a board out of there and you put them in a plastic container well guess what where's your grounding

Zach bombs to thank God was on their electrical engineer wizard and he gave us an excellent class in electrical engineering and how to properly ground so that that was food for thought for a lot of guys who hadn't really worked that all out and what am I going to do with grounding

I'm glad there are people who know what they're doing and even some of us don't know what we're doing until somebody tells us hey you don't know what you're doing you get wrapped up in your own head sometimes and then it isn't until you put that out there for public judgment

somebody say hey where's your grounds and you're not stupid you're just you're just in your own head you were thinking about sound you were thinking about how am I going to get to heat and what's the most efficiency and then you skip that one step it's so technical

the whole mining space especially if you're doing some clever builds and stuff like that there is just so much that goes into it it's so far away from someone who's just got an auto DCA going into a wallet

it's not something that you set up in an afternoon and set it and forget it and you're done this is like a constantly changing environment you just have to keep learning all the time and even if you are an electrical engineer

there's a load of other stuff that you're not going to understand if you're doing the plumbing to have an immersion set up well you don't know that if you're an electrical engineer or the more technical side of some of the code that you might be running or whatever it is there is always something

that you don't know and that's why you need groups of people who have different types of expertise to lean on each other and help each other so it's really cool to have these sort of calls and groups where people are giving the information out and helping each other

the level of dedication that these guys have to their own builds and then also their willingness to share is I don't know it's a big swing from the beginning of this episode where it was weird a little bit bitter and angry at the man

but that's the spirit that a lot of plebs have you can be bitter and angry at the man and then turn right back around and be loving and helpful and encouraging to your fellow pleb

cool mining set up how did that go and what was the reaction to it is what I can tell you first of all but is a fucking legend and it was really really nice to meet him in person. Secondly, even though I had a ticket thanks to Bitcoin Q and A and the foundation team

I barely went into the conference and I only saw that Bert had a set up a really cool looking set up in the shape of a Bitcoin B with all lights and miners running and everything after I already got home so didn't see it in person

but I see that he was doing something clever and it was obviously in one of the tents or something but I didn't really step foot in the conference. I felt a little bit

and he says you make interesting points, Mr. FUDster. Whatever. Anyways, here's SF's point point one. You argue economies of scale encourage centralization over time, both pool and minor level. Mining is extremely competitive.

Strong direct fee incentives, economies of scale and profit maximization cause mining to get more centralized over time. That's what that guy said. SF said this is not a bad thing. Newer hardware will outcompete older hardware. This will free up old hardware so it can be repurposed in previously uneconomical ways.

Anywhere, heat is needed to be generated, which is now being done by resistive heating or natural gas can switch to generating said heat with repurposed acic chips, heating your pool, heating your home, heating your business, see the work of among others, Schnitzel, Bitcoin, water heater, so on and so forth.

Eventually, even something that is used sparingly like a tea kettle, I believe he said that on your interview with him, Max, SF is a good listener. He retains everything that he hears on this show.

Instead of using a heating element, use Bitcoin mining chips to boil your water for tea as newer chips displace old ones. Counter-intuitively, you can even use the heat generated from Bitcoin miners to cool your fridge and freezer.

If you do not know how this works, I suggest you check out how gas propane fridges and freezers work. He's on fire. I'm telling you, this tweet got me all pumped. I've read it a few times since.

He says now imagine combining these heating, cooling solutions for your home office business, etc. The efficiency gains when done properly are huge. Good for decentralization of the network, good for the environment, good for all of us.

Pools, now he goes into mining pools. Pools are dynamic in more than one way. Firstly, they need not consist of one entity. Instead, they could and are operated by multiple miners that are already geographically dispersed.

Per example, solo, ck pool, Lorentia pool, cyber ion mine? I don't know that one. Siberian mine, they move to where the electricity is cheapest bootstrapping the poorest region. Whoa, I think something got messed up there. This is hard to read tweets on the air.

Anyway, miners in general move to where the electricity is cheapest bootstrapping the poorest regions into economy as they move while acting as an electric grid stabilizer. And that's a conversation that we also have with Troy Cross.

On that episode where we went over his paper how miners will chase the cheapest energy. He also talks about Stratum v2. Stratum v2 introduces increased security while making data transfers more efficient with less infrastructure requirements.

There is also a growing community of home and business oriented pleb miners, folks like Bitcoin Bloam, heating greenhouses, and some guy named John, I don't know. Hottle Rev and Bitcoin Hotel that heats their hotels with miners.

Anyone can get a cheap S9 and convert to a space heater using the excellent guide by crypto cloaks. Bit by BitPod, never heard of them, does an excellent job in trying to give an overview on what is going on in that scene.

Additionally, projects like Bitax, that's Scott 9000, that's an open source ASIC, and Nerdminer, or ShurikenPy.io by Real Urban Hacker, Raspberry Pi Mining, or working hard to make mining available for hobbyists and enthusiasts at home wherever they may be.

And let us not forget about all the folks working hard, shutting down wasteful flaring and replacing it with much cleaner Bitcoin solutions, see Hottle Tarantula and SG Barber. I see lots of effort going into keeping the original ethos of a freedom and egalitarian network being built out right now in the depths of the bear market.

I don't see this trend reversing anytime soon, I think it will explode even more. He actually has a .2, which is even longer, but I would suggest, I'm going to post this on the show notes to everybody go and read this SF tweet.

And that we're having the base load updates and staying up till four o'clock in the morning, writing them is difficult to maintain. And then a constant level. So he said he's going to take a little bit of break from the base load updates, but we have a soothing song to go along with a quick base load update.

Where's the mirror? Where's the mirror? Base load updates into the 2024 Old Farmers Almanac. Do you have an Old Farmers Almanac version in the UK, Max? I have no idea what it is. Okay. Old Farmers Almanac is a publication that comes out every year, and all the farmers get in.

It's got all the zodiac cycles in it, and the weather report, and when to plant this, and when to, to do these different things on a farm. And a lot of people swear by it, accuracy is pretty good for predicting the weather for the year.

So here in North America, Old Farmers Almanac predicts that seasonable cold and all of winter's delights. This winter's forecast will surely excite snow bunnies, and sweater lovers alike, promising a lot of cold and snow across North America.

Though, get ready, get those space heaters ready to go, folks, and it comes from the Old Farmers Almanac and the Coinbase load. We don't have that. Well, we probably do have that hit, but I've never heard of it.

He also says what I'm noticing is that although price for electricity and natural gas for retail consumers, residential commercial and industrial is important. He is finding that contract terms and conditions are becoming much more important nowadays.

Protecting clients from oopsies and hidden charges is somewhat of an art. Not only do you need to understand the conditions of the agreement, but you must implement a strategy to move around them, or just simply not have the client assume that risk at all.

Be extremely careful out there, folks. Signing agreements are a necessity, but make sure you have folks that understand the industry of which the contract is related to. That's my advertisement.

Listen, if you are building a mine, I don't care if it's one megawatt, ten megawatt, you have to know all these ins and outs of the pricing structure and what you're signing. Because just anecdotally, in talking to base load in his more fiat side, fiat job side of things, he is capable of saving some companies, larger companies.

Maybe like a commercial retailer, millions of dollars in waste that they had no clue that they didn't have to pay those rates that they paid or whatever surcharges they paid or whatever is in his history.

But please, it doesn't have to be base load. If you're a miner, if you're listening to the show, it should be base load who you reach out to help you structure these contracts. You ought to know this by now, but reach out to a professional before you get in over your hedge.

Sound advice. Yeah, to close out the Bitcoin base load update, I just wanted to go over a chart that he has here in his update, the amount of electricity that comes from an independent utility versus an electric utility.

The independent utilities are from 2013 to 2022 are up 16%. So it isn't just your large electrical provider that can provide you energy. There are new sources of energy coming online. As a matter of fact, from 2013 to 2022, wind consisted of 1% of the power generation source in 2013.

Now in 2022, it's 4%, solar was 0%, now it's 1%. Coal really, really, really has taken a hit. And I can tell you here in Western Pennsylvania, we shut down a very large coal fire power plant.

And my rates have gone up ever since, by the way, not to get that large argument. But in 2013, coal was 50% of the electric generation in the United States. And now it's 28%. Whereas natural gas was 21% and now 37.

Nuclear has only gone up 2%. Oh, this is 2022. I bet you that's a lot more in 2023 now that Vogel 3 and 4 in Georgia have gone online. That's an altered chart. And hydro is about the same.

I guess we're not building very many hydro dam. It's 11% 2013 and 11% now. That is your Bitcoin base load update. And perhaps we'll do something fun and different next time. Maybe we'll get him to record him playing some music and singing us a song about electricity.

I look forward to it. To close out action news, there is an update on the mining development toolkit from Square. And they're talking about the MDK hashboard. It says what does a hashboard do?

Well, we already know what it does. But this MDK hashboard is going to use 100, 100 chips. So the new K-Pros that I got are 77. I think like the J-Pros are 128 chips. This particular board is going to use 100 block scale 1000 series A6 in a grid like array.

It's pretty neat looking board. It seems bigger than a lot of the other boards. But the heatsink design is different. It says in order to keep temperatures under control and maintain operational steady state,

aluminum heatsinks are attached to the board and make contact with each ASIC using a highly conductive thermal interface material or TIM. This extracts heat from the ASIC to keep it under specific target and operating temperature in order to maintain a high power efficiency.

And in looking at the heatsink, it looks like it's going to be two of the big giant block heatsinks that the J-Pros use. So they got real creative and just use the exact same heatsink that Bitmain uses.

But here's the most interesting part to me. It will have a distributed controller architecture. It is in a typical minor architecture. All control functions are performed by the control board.

However, we opted to replace a microcontroller on the hashboard itself, allowing the local processor of certain functions as ASIC balancing while leaving the higher level control functions to the controller board.

This allows novel, flexible architectures to be supported, specifically a single control board or any computer running an open source firmware could support tens or even hundreds of hashboards limited only by the communication protocols between the controller and the hashboard itself.

To me, that opens design up to innovators to say, "Well, if I can control all of these hashboards with some computer that I've built, then my design for the housing of the hashboards themselves is pretty wide open."

That was the most exciting part. They said their next steps once launched in the market year, we hope to see the MDK hashboard employing in a variety of emerging mining use cases, including heat reuse and stranded power applications, as well as in traditional industrial mining.

As part of this, we'd love to see the MDK used to explore innovative, sustainable energy applications for mining. We also hope our transparent and open source approach offers a material, practical improvement for developers looking to work on novel mining applications.

We look forward to feedback from MDK users on how we can best serve their needs with our future mining system hardware and software offering. So everybody out there that's got all these crazy ideas you've been talking about for a long time, reach out to mining@block.xyz.
